Great Southern Wines @ SG

4 award-winning estates from the Great Southern wine region came together in Singapore from 29 October to 31 October to host 3 days of events. 

 

A light evening breeze was beginning to blow when we started our set of events aboard Stewords Riverboat. The wine stations were set up on the top deck of the boat and a sense of excitement was building. Galafrey, Rockcliffe, Poacher's Ridge and La Violetta are seasoned practitioners at wine-tasting events. But on a boat?

 

The returning speed boats, fetching Kusu Island pilgrims back to Singapore, stirred the waters, gently rocking the otherwise steady riverboat.

 

Linda Tyrer (Galafrey) was grinning widely,

 

"I was the only one still standing and drinking at the bar when we crossed the English channel ... we'll be alright".

 

 

 

We planted our feet firmly on the ground on day two, in a wine bistro at the heart of Duxton Hill, a quintessential watering hole in a historic neighbourhood. Twenty trade and media representatives attended the event - a significant achievement given that we did not have a Public Relations firm engaged - something fundamental it seems in a competitive industry these days. The Great Southern allure and the estates' reputation were together a big draw. However, we take pride not in the turn-out. Even the very best needs affirmation.

It was a good day.

 

 

 

And so we were building momentum going into day three. Reservations continued to pour in 18 hours before the wine dinner at Pollen. We were on a roll and we were confident of a strong finish. 

 

"Darius, we were supposed to stop reservations at 30 pax... we now have 40. I need to speak to the Chef", Kelvin Kan

 

I had better bring more wines then.

 

But the wines were the least of our concern. Akaroa king salmon with Rieslings, roasted quail with a Rosé, beef short rib with Shiraz, and chocolate with Cabernet Sauvignons. Yes, you heard us: chocolate and Cabernet Sauvignons as a match. The real concern here is assembling a phenomenal menu that we have to do better the next time round!
